Fighting Diabetes with JDRF
According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, there are more than three million Canadians that are diagnosed with diabetes. For over 40 years JDRF has improved lives by operating a diabetes research foundation for people who live with type 1 diabetes. This is achieved by various mediums for participants to aid them in raising funds through many different types of fundraising events. Who are JDRF?
JDRF stands for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, a non-profit organization that is committed to helping type 1 diabetic individuals, which now is not just diagnosed to children but adults of all ages. For that reason, the term ‘juvenile’ was not accurate, which is why the name of the organization was changed to simply JDRF. Their research efforts have now reached coast to coast for the ultimate goal to find the cure and end type one diabetes. JDRF’s support doesn’t go just to funding research, but also supporting the community with their journey by encouraging a healthy lifestyle including daily exercise.
Success of JDRF
JDRF is a huge fundraising organization and has played a pivotal role in pushing research forward. It has raised over $1.9 billion (US) since its inception 40 years ago. This money has been donated to over 50 different clinical studies. Back in 1970 JDRF provided the funding behind the first long term sugar level tests, which was a breakthrough in treating the condition. Fast forward to the 2000s and JDRF researchers have identified triggers for beta cell regeneration – another milestone in diabetes treatment. Fundraising Efforts
JDRF holds multiple fundraising events, including the Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes, the JDRFI Ride as well as gala events. One of the biggest fundraising initiatives is the Community Walk. This year’s walk is on 12th June 2016. It happens across many different towns and cities all over Canada. Families take part, as well as individuals, companies, clubs and groups.
